Biology of Apanteles carpatus (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a parasitoid of tineid moths (Lepidoptera: Tineidae)

The wasp Apanteles carpatus (Say) is a solitary koinobiont endoparasitoid of Tineola bisselliella (Hummel). Apanteles carpatus can complete development in all larval stages of T. bisselliella. However, when given a choice, older larval host stages ofthe webbing clothes moth are preferred for oviposition. Intraspecific competition for resources and superparasitism reduces the reproductive success of the parasitoid. Nevertheless, A. carpatus is an ideal candidate for biological control of tineid moths in households and museums.
