The problem of maintaining and developing skills for practicing engineers in the world today is discussed in the context of Engineering Structural Integrity (ESI) and a shortage of experienced personnel. The importance of developing a sound approach to ESI training and the dissemination of such experience and of the interdisciplinary methodology involved is discussed, and some suggestions are made towards meeting these goals.
