KOREA-RUSSIA TRADE DEVELOPING PROCESS AFTER THE ESTABLISHMENT OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONSHIPS WITH RUSSIA

This paper attempts to analyze the evolutionary process of the Korea-Russian trade following diplomatic ties with Russia, using Korean export, import, and direct investment statistics. Based on such analysis, the paper also attempts to affirm the priorities for the trade development with Russia in future, in addition to examining the recent situation of the Russian market. Our Governments' efforts resulted in improved trade with China. However, its trade relations with Russia and the Eastern Europe have yet to be improved. Since such a situation resulted from the lack of economic incentives, geopolitical factors, and political/military factors, most research undertaken at this point have tended to focus on military and political areas. Therefore, analysis of such factors and trends in the Korea-Russian trade situation has yet to be undertaken fully. This paper thus attempts to focus on the descriptive analysis of the structure of the Korea-Russian trade and direct investment over the last 10 years, rather than regression analysis and time-series survey as measuring techniques.
