The transient thermal model of a winter house has been presented for a cold climatic region of Srinagar in India. Climatic parameters and system parameters are the two factors which are important in designing a "winter house" from thermal comfort point of view. In climatic parameters, solar insolation and ambient temperature are the two main things. Roof area, glazed area, wall area, inclination of roof, isothermal mass are main features of system parameters. The concept of water drum walls and transwall for heating the house has also been incorporated in the design. The particular combination of these parameters help to design a winter house with thermal comfort for that particular harsh cold climate region. It observed that the condition of steady state with required thermal load levelling is achieved with the help of isothermal mass after 3-4 days. The transwall gives better performance than that of the effect of either isothermal mass or waterwalls.
