This study is to investigate the effect of electromagnetic stirring on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 309L welds. 304 stainless steel plates and 309L filler wire were used for the base metal and the weld metal, respectively. Multi-pass welding was performed with a mechanical gas tungsten arc welding process with/without electromagnetic stirring (EMS). The results revealed that EMS could change the grain orientation and fine the crystallite size of 309L welds, while the composition of weldment didn't vary significantly along the cross section. As a result, the yield strength and tensile strength of 309L weldment with EMS both were improved with the same elongation.
