In this paper the relationship between flux (J) and transmembrane pressure (TMP) was investigated by the use of a pilot-scale plant (1.4 m~3 volume) fed with a real wastewater and equipped with a hollow-fibre membrane module (nominal pore size = 20 nm). The whole experimental period was divided into four different runs during which the flux (J) was kept constant to 25 LMH~1 and each run started after single chemical cleaning operations. The intrinsic membrane resistance (R_m) was found to be practically the same in the four runs, that is to say 0.750 kPa m~2 h/l. In the ripartition of resistances relative importance to the total, the resistance due to concentration polarization (R_g) accounts for 45-50% while the one due to the cake formation (R_f) for 35-39%. R_f was relatively unaffacted by operating parameters and was around twice the intrinsic membrane resistance R_m. However the resistance of the polarized layer R_g was larger than R_m (up to 3R_m) but comparable to the fouling resistance R_f: this may indicate that the fluidodinamic conditions applied are suitable to keep the R_g value low.
