An experimental investigation of the saturated water pool boiling crisis as well as post-crisis phenomena has been carried out. A model-based technique has been adopted to design the test apparatus in order to investigate the pool boiling from a horizontal flat copper surface facing upwards the bulk liquid. Nucleate and CHF experimental data are presented and compared with the most used correlations. Post-crisis heat flux and superheating results, that are obtained during a slow cooling transient, show a near-wall instability phenomenon. In order to visualize the nucleate boiling and film boiling during the whole bubble departure cycle a digital video camera has been used and several photographs are presented.
