Comparative Evaluation of the Conventional Pap Test and the Residual Material Left On the Pap Test Brush in Thin Prep Liquid Cytology

It is estimated that liquid cytology -^sThin Prep method is of greater diagnostic sensitivity than the conventional Pap smear. Using liquid cytology in our study the brush is rinsed into the cytyc preservative solution after a conventional smear has been prepared. The conventional Pap smear represents only a small subsample of the cellular material collected, with the remainder traditionally being discarded. The subsample of epithelial cells used to prepare a Thin Prep slide is systematic and random and thus reproducibly representative of the entire epithelial cell population on sampling device. False negative results for the conventional Pap test were atypical for Thin Prep Pap test of the remaining material on the cervical brush. Statistical significance was better for LSIL ( p< 0,001 ).
