The fourth-generation technology for solution on-line analyzers has been introduced in 2003. This paper shows the considerations in the choice of sample handling for the solvent extraction and electrowinning stages. Design and operating considerations are described for representative high availability primary sampling, which is critical for analyzer performance. During the implementation of each project, the design of the sample handling and its operating program are based in deepening understanding of the design parameters of the process. Both the process solution characteristics, solution pumping parameters and the climate affect the final design choices. The considerations in installation of the analyzer system and its secondary sample handling in the industrial area of the plant are also discussed. The paper describes the application of solution on-line process analyzers in copper heap-leach, solvent extraction and electrowinning circuits. The latest concentrate direct leach application is discussed as well. The benefits of using assay based monitoring and control are seen in better cathode quality, increased throughput and recovery of copper.
