Thermal analysis (TG, DTG), infrared spectra and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) were used to study the interactions of 4-methylpyridine (4-Mepy) and 4-ethylpyridine (4-Etpy) in Co- and Ni- exchanged montmorillonite (Co-MMT, Ni-MMT) and clathrates of the type [NiL_4(NCS)_2].nG, L=4-Etpy, G=1-methylnaphtalene (1-MeN), 1-chloronaphtalene (1-C1N) and 1-bromonaphtalene (1-BrN). The interactions between the Co~(2+) and Ni~(2+) ions and pyridine derivatives in montmorillonite exhibit predominantly Lewis acid-base character. The differences in mass loss and peak temperatures on the TG and DTG curves of clathrates are associated with different guest - host interactions in these compounds.
