The growing use of multimedia and e-commerce applications in the Internet presents scalability concerns and new demand for computational resources. A cluster of workstations is especially suitable for such computation-intensive applications. In this paper, we present the design of a transcoding cluster for multimedia applications. Three different load sharing schemes have been implemented. Performance of the system is evaluated in terms of system throughput, out-of-order rate of outgoing media streams and load rebalancing overhead. Based on the experimental results, we present the suitable environments where each load sharing scheme can be applied.
