Undertreatment of hypercholesterolemia in Bulgaria in primary and secondary prevention setting - the CEPHEUS experience

The aim of the CEPHEUS study was to establish the proportion of patients in Bulgaria taking lipid-lowering drugs (LLDs) who reached the LDL-C goals according to the existing guidelines - the FJETF, the NCEP ATP III and 2004 updated NCEP ATP III. Overall, 43.1% patients were at the target LDL-C goals as recommended by the FJETF. According NCEP 2001 guidelines 45.24% and according the updated NCEP guidelines 2004 only 21.51% of the patients have reached the target resp. The results of this survey highlight the fact that there is significant treatment gap in hypercholesterolemia management in Bulgarian patients receiving LLD.
