Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetic Patients Determined by a Newly Developed Questionnaire on Autonomic Regulation (aR)

During the last years, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes has constantly been increasing and is becoming a political and economic challenge. Estimates of the prevalence of diabetes for the European and North American region range between 8 and 10 % (1). Among diabetes patients the prevalence of an associated significant coronary artery disease ranges between 65% and 75%. (2, 3).The estimated costs to cover diabetes care in 2025 will be between 7% and 13% of the world's healthcare budget (4). For the control of complications, regular screenings of the primarily affected organs play a crucial role (5). Cost-effective parameters for the determination of the necessary screening frequency are of great importance. A loss of regulation in patients with diabetes compared to healthy people and depending on diabetic complications could be shown with the "autonomic regulation" (aR), an 18 items questionnaire on autonomic regulation, containing three subscales: a) orthostatic-cir-culatory regulation, b) rest/activity regulation and c) digestive regulation (6, 7).
