High performance fiber reinforced cement composites (HPFRCC) form a class of cement composites characterized by a tensile stress-strain response that exhibits strain hardening accompanied by multiple cracking. Ductile fiber reinforced cement composites (DFRCC) have been defined as composites that exhibit multiple cracking in bending but not in tension. For all practical purposes, such behavior can be described as "deflection-hardening" to differentiate it from that of "strain-hardening." This paper develops simple expressions and formulation to characterize strain-hardening and deflection- hardening FRC composites; it strongly recommends that in the future other descriptors such as HPFRCC or DFRCC or ECC be dropped in favor of the above classification.
