摘要

This article represents a network engineering primer for the next-generation Internet. The authors consider the impact of optical networks in conjunction with Quality of Service (QoS) parameters currently proposed and in use within the public Internet. A primary ingrediant in the successful provisioning of QoS sessions requires traffic engineering techniques and methodologies by automated agents or network engineers. Given the scalability of next-generation routers, as well as the reduced complexity of switching MPLS Protocol Data Units (PDUs), it becomes possible to utilize core optical routers in exciting new ways. The author's aim is not only to outline optical network engineering options, but also to suggest advanced traffic engineering considerations when designing the next generation Internet.
