The Enhanced General Packet Radio Service (EGPRS) provides for high rate data transmission over TDMA radio access networks by means of a GMSK/8-PSK modulation scheme. This paper will show that the standard forward error correction codes provided do not offer enough protection for real-time video communications services. A new forward error correction scheme which employs recursive decoding of Reed-Solomon and convolutional codes is introduced. The proposed bearers are designed to be backwards-compatible with the standard EGPRS forward error correction scheme as they employ the same inner codes, yet are shown to provide significant improvements in performance when used to transmit compressed video.
