This project represents the innovative use of both natural and synthetic products to establish wetlands in a challenging urban environment. The project was constructed without bringing heavy equipment onto the planting surface, and was accomplished with a small crew (3 men). The use of innovative materials also saved money. For example, the 8-inch high (20.3 cm) geocellular containment system offered a foundation equal to approximately 2 feet (0.6 meters) of stone with an additional reduction in weight over the soft foundation. The use of geotextile tubes eliminated the need for deep bulk heading and riprap. Soft, unconsolidated sediments in similar locations on the Hudson River can be up to 80 feet (24.4 meters). Without geotextiles, this project would have required excessive quantities of fill material. This approach to river restoration will be appropriate for sites along the Hudson River and many other urban shorelines.
