Mechanism, Modeling and Application of Laser Large Area Surface Modification

Laser surface modification has been an advanced material surface technology. It mainly consists of laser heat treatment, laser alloying and laser cladding, which is widely applied for automotive, metallurgy, Oil industry and so on. However, in past years some efforts have been made to employ the focused laser beam for laser modification in industry. Although the technology has some advantages, but narrow single pass area and non-uniform metallurgical quality limited its industrial application. A particularly challenging industrial application required a wide hardening track, in which hardness uniformly distribution is there. So, supported by The National Committee of Science and Technology of China, we have developed the Laser Large Area Quenching and Cladding system, arts and some industrial application. In .this paper, mechanism, modeling, microstructure and some important applications have been reported. It is shown that the single pass for laser quenching or cladding has the width with 10-30mm adjustable.
