Mitsui has succeeded in developing new phosphazene catalysts that do not contain metallic elements. Use of the anions induced by phosphazene catalysts has provided highly productive and selective anionic reactions. The nucleophilic substitution reaction of chlorobenzene with methoxy anion produced anisole smoothly at room temperature, and phosphazene catalysts also provided polypropylene glycols with high purity and high molecular weight, that have drastically improved the impact resilience of polyurethane foams. Furthermore their catalysts provided the living character to anionic polymerization reactions of methyl methacrylate and poly (methyl methacrylate) with higher glass transition temperature.
