Solid state devices incorporating thin film zirconia electrolytes have shown a significant performance increase over those devices with thicker electrolytes. The ohmic resistance decrease with thin electrolytes contributes to the performance increase. However, a more than proportional increase in thin-electrolyte cell performance indicates an enhancement in electrode performance. Thin-film zirconia electrolyte technology has been applied to solid oxide fuel cells and oxygen generators. High performance at reduced operating temperature has been achieved for these zirconic-based devices.
