Reconciling Fisheries with Conservation and Maintaining Biodiversity

This session attracted a lot of interest. In ad-dition to the five oral presentations, there were 30 scheduled posters from 11 countries. To-gether they included criteria to identify and delist species according to extinction risk, the concept and importance of biodiversity value (both economic and inter-generational), conservation status (particularly in freshwater and for salmonids), and case studies of genetic, population, species and ecosystem maintenance as policy or management goals. Under-standing the specific effects on biodiversity of selective fishing, bycatch, fish culture, and so forth was identified as important for seeking conservation and management approaches likely to be effective. Monitoring and enforcement were also addressed. However, the necessary institutional support and cooperation have a long way to go to meet many conservation needs in exploited marine species.
