摘要

TiAl-based intermetallic compounds haveattracted considerable interest as structuralmaterials for high-temperature applications due totheir low density and substantial mechanical strengthat high temperatures. However, one major drawbackhindering industrial application arises from theinsufficient oxidation resistance at temperaturesbeyond 700 deg C. In the present contribution somegeneral aspects of high temperature oxidation ofTiAl-based intermetallics will be presented. Thiswill be followed by a discussion of the influence ofalloying elements, in particular niobium, and of theeffect of nitrogen in the oxidizing environment on thehigh temperature oxidation behaviour of such materials.
