Uranium-Plutonium Separations by Ion Exchange

Many programs in the nuclear complex require uranium processing to be performed in plutonium-contaminated enclosures. Understandably, this work produces trace plutonium contamination in the resulting uranium residues. Before reprocessing the uranium residues, the plutonium concentration must be reduced from approximately 10 g Pu/kg U to 100 μg Pu/kg U.
