Plutonium and Minor Actinide Fuels - The Good, the Bad, and the Future?

Whatever the future split in energy-producing systems may be in the U.S. and abroad, nuclear energy will continue to contribute substantially to the production of electric power. The current system of light water reactor (LWR) nuclear power plants (NPP) has already accumulated hundreds of tons of spent fuel and will continue to do so for at least a few more decades. Whatever new reactor systems are under consideration, whether they be advanced LWRs or next-generation reactors, spent-fuel forms will continue to be generated.
