In this paper, a new method for rock stress measurement, which is named the Cross-sectional Borehole Deformation Method (CBDM), is suggested. Concretely, the fundamentals of the CBDM are shown, as well as an instrument with a laser displacement sensor for measurement of deformation in the cross section of a borehole. Based on the results of theoretical examination and laboratory experiment, it is clear that the subjected stress can be estimated by the CBDM using an instrument with the laser displacement sensor.
