The catalytic properties of solid surface are determined by its composition and structure on the atomic scale. It is essential to know the exact surface structure including defects, vacancies, steps etc., as well as the exact locations of promoter atoms. In this presentation, the surface chemical state and composition of Cu-Ga_2O_3/ZrO_2 catalyst for methanol synthesis under various conditions were extensively investigated using XPS.
