A Shared Infrastructure for Cooperative Sensing Applications

Sensors are envisioned to become part of tomorrow's information infrastruc-ture; they will provide sensing data about the physical world anywhere, any-time. Despite the remarkable progress that has been made in wireless sensornetworks, there is a gap between individual sensors, networks and the visionof a shared infrastructure. In this paper, we introduce AEGIS, an architecturethat unifies many sensors and networks that may belong to different partiesinto a common infrastructure. The infrastructure supports the reuse of a com-mon set of underlying sensors and networks; many different applications candraw desired sensing data from any sensors or networks through this sharedinfrastructure. It serves as a middle layer that decouples the direct binding ofapplications from sensors, thus allowing applications and sensor networks todevelop separately from each other. AEGIS represents our first step towardsa shared sensing infrastructure. This paper investigates the requirements andthe architectural design and discusses particular issues related to various com-ponents and their functionality.
