The river Lippe is a typical lowland river contributing to the river Rhine in Germany. It is widely used for numerous purposes such as discharge of treated sewage, mining water and cooling water. In order to evaluate the possible impact of cooling water discharges on the river continuum the dynamic water quality model FGSM of the German Association on Water, Wastewater and Waste (ATV/DVWK) was set up and a long term calibration of flow and water temperature was successfully carried out. Based on the calibrated model several scenarios were calculated and evaluated in terms of the possible effects on the temperature budget of the river system.
