Diffusive Mass Transfer and Its Effect upon Boundary-Layer Flows

The boundary-layer flow above a permeable plate is considered. Fluid transport through the slot occurs as a result of species diffusion; the fluid contained below the plate having a higher concentration than the fluid in the body of the flow. The diffusive mass transfer serves to reduce the skin-friction, but not to the point at which flow separation can occur. The decelerated flow is, however, highly susceptible to inviscid Rayleigh waves indicating a predisposition for the flow to undergo a transition to turbulence.
