In this paper a verification of mathematical models to describe roughness and wear of sliding machine parts is done. KRAGELSKI'S well known surface model is compared to an advanced statistical model on the base of WEINHAUER'S surface description. However, the real goal is to use one of these theories as input for a simulation to calculate the occurring wear. Therefore software was developed to find out the effect of each surface model on the results. To prove whether this simulation delivers appropriate precision, comparisons with empirical methods as well as measurements were done. These two approaches ― theoretical and empirical approach ― are compared and discussed.
