Digital enterprise technology (DET) is a framework for configuring digital product and process development technologies which assimilates design data, at various levels of completeness, with a high degree of feedback from the production environment. This paper describes applied research into two major facets of DET to tackle some of the fundamental issues facing producers of high-value, high-complexity products within distributed production networks. Theses challenges include the provision of early design feedback and the inclusion of dynamic measurement data from production. The methods described demonstrate how DET-based strategies for design, manufacture and product lifecycle management utilise recent advances in computer-based analysis, simulation tools, and 3D coordinate metrology and surface characterisation.
