Practical Applications of Overwater Data to CALMET Modeling in Coastal Domains

The use of multiple meteorological observations of surface and upper air data in concert with output of a prognostic mesoscale meteorological model results in robust simulations of atmospheric conditions using the CALMET meteorological processor. This approach has become the recommended method for conducting refined CALPUFF analyses to evaluate impacts on air quality related values at federally protected Class I areas. CALMET is equipped to perform a refined assessment of atmospheric turbulence in the marine boundary layer and coastal zones if overwater data is obtained and input to the model. In theory, turbulent dispersion phenomena are considerably different than over land. Therefore, the use of overwater data would be expected to significantly enhance the simulation of meteorological conditions in marine environments. In practice, the availability of overwater data is limited and requires substantial efforts to preprocess and quality assure raw observations. This analysis presents a case study of the application of overwater data to CALMET analysis in the Southeastern United States where it is revealed that overwater data has a nontrivial infiuence on meteorological fields predicted by CALMET despite limitations in the spatial resolution of available data.
