摘要

The use of special moment resisting frames (SMRF) in tall story buildings presents a problem of drift control. Plate girders of depths of 40 inches or greater are normally required for SMRF which present problems of ductility in SMRF connections. This paper presents a new concept in tall story buildings such as a convention center, referred to as a Coupled Girder Moment Resisting Frame (CGMRF) which uses two girders at each floor and couples them using vertical links. Use of Friction Dampers and CGMRF to reach the project performance goals is discussed. Connection testing and non-linear push over analysis results are presented that show ductility in the system in a two-phase yielding of the vertical links followed by the girders. Connection design procedures are also presented.
