High Performance greases are used for critical applications viz.high temperatures, heavy loads,high speeds,water ingress conditions etc.Conventional greases used for such applications are generally based on Li-complex,Al-complex,polyurea,and sulphonate complex type of thickeners.Li-complex greases in general may be used up to 150°C however their performance in presence of water and at high temperatures is not so good.Al-complex based greases perform well at high temperatures and in presence of water,however this class of greases possesses limited compatibility with other greases.Sulphonate complex greases perform good at high temperature and in presence of water but exhibit limited compatibility.Polyurea greases known for its high temperature applications,however in India these greases are not being manufactured. It has been generally realized that conventional high performance greases are associated with one or other type of technical or logistics problem.Therefore there is upcoming trend to use mixed base greases for many critical applications.The types of mixed greases known in the art are Li-Ca,Al-Na,Al-clay etc.As these types of greases possess the properties of both types of thickeners,their performance in some critical applications emerges out to be better. Simple mixed base greases are well known in literature however complex based mixed base greases have not been reported to a considerable extent.In view of this,an effort has been made by us to develop Ti-Li complex base grease.After careful experimentation followed by evaluation,a new Ti-Li complex based grease has been successfully developed.Physico-chemical and performance data of this grease indicate that it possesses high drop(>260°C),long high temperature life(287 hrs), excellent load carrying capability(weld load>250 kg),inherent anti-wear&antirust characteristics,excellent inherent thermal and oxidation stability.Based on its Physico-chemical properties this grease has high potential to be a high temperature grease for severe applications and probably an alternate to few synthetic oil based greases. This has been field tried in slip seal application of sponge iron industry and ID fan bearing of power plant,steel plants etc.Field trial results of this grease indicate its excellent performance in these applications.Performance details of this new grease along with Physico-chemical data have been covered in this paper.
