Not-so-common endocrine syndrome - pheochromocytoma

Pheochromocytoma is a rare tumor that usually arises from the adrenal medulla in older dogs. In humans, it can arise from other sites of chromaffin tissue derived from embryonal neuroectoderm. Most pheochromocytomas in humans are benign; however, inthe dog about 50 percent can be malignant and show metastatic behavior. Most of the signs associated with this tumor are attributed to excessive synthesis and release of L-epinephrine and L-norepinephrine.
