START-UP AND OPERATING EXPERIENCE OF NEW NON-RECOVERY COKE OVENS AT THE ILLAWARRA COKE COMPANY, COALCLIFF, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA

The new TKEC designed non-recovery coke ovens are in day to day operation at the Coalcliff coke plant. The results obtained since June 2001 show high coke quality and a significant improvement in productivity when compared with the original ovens which the new ovens replaced. In addition to the day to day operation these new ovens will also be utilized for further carbonization tests which will prove achievable coke qualities with various coal blends and provide interested clients with the opportunity to test their own coal blends in these new technology ovens. As expected there are no visible emissions, confirming the attractiveness of this cokemaking process from an environmental viewpoint. With these positive results, the intention is to ultimately replace the remainder of the original ovens at the Coalcliff coke plant with ovens of the new design.
