HOT METAL QUALITY: ALWAYS A HOT TOPIC

The Corus IJmuiden site in the Netherlands is one of the four integrated steelmaking routes within the Corus Group. IJmuiden annual output is 6.5 million tonnes of steel, predominantly for strip and packaging applications. The core of the ironmaking facilities are the two blast furnaces #6 and #7 (Table I). Typical production levels of these furnaces are 7000 and 10,000 thm/day respectively, with a total annual output of 5.85 million tonnes hot metal. Both furnaces are operated at low coke rates (300 kg/ton) and consequently high levels of pulverised coal injection (>200 kg/mm). Ferrous feedstock for the blast furnaces is a mixture of 50% olivine pellets and 50% ultra high basicity sinter, both produced on-site. Both furnaces are operated at a low slag volume just above 200 kg/tonnes of hot metal.
