International Coking Coal Market Trends

The International coking coal market changed in 2001. For the first time in many years the international supply of coking coal was very tight and prices increased. A number of factors contributed to this change and the purpose of this presentation will be to discuss the history behind the current market situation. The views in this paper are solely those of the author - and have a focus from the Canadian coking coal industry. A number of factors have impacted the international supply and demand of coking coal during the last 30 to 40 years. The most important include closures and building of coking plants and coking coal mines in different parts of the world, price of energy, technology changes, buying practices of the Japanese Steel Industry (JSM) and exchange rate changes. This paper will deal with the interchange of these factors over time and discuss the current situation in international trade of coking coal.
