The term Plant Design System covers three dimensional (3D) design and visualisation systems as well as intelligent (live linked) 2D documentation. The application of these tools on projects, and ongoing plant maintenance work, can result in significant cost savings for pulp and paper plant owners because of better decision making, improved accuracy and consequent reduced rework costs. 3D design for retrofit projects involves special challenges because the 3 dimensional "as-built" data has to be assembled from the working plant. Technology such as photogrammetry and laser scanning has emerged to meet the challenge. Communication is a key element of all successful projects. Plant Design Systems bring visualisation software as a new tool to allow the whole team to get involved earlier and enhance the design. For the mill owner this benefit is seen in faster startups and reduced commissioning time. In the future, Enterprise Engineering systems will integrate these tools to provide further cost savings after startup through faster access to reliable information for maintenance and troubleshooting.
