This paper concerns the testing of Air Liquide's recently patented EGAL inert blanketing process on the melting and casting of 316 alloy stainless steel by ICS Florida in Fort Pierce, FL. This test was conducted to realize the potential benefits of clean steel melting and casting. The foundry parameters observed and reported on in this study include scrap, weld repair, furnace melt cycle time, furnace crucible life, ladle life, alloy additions and de-ox additions. The philosophy of clean steel melting and casting is introduced. Also, a general overview of the EGAL process is presented along with the range of results of this process application in over 100 foundries. Melting parameters, test procedures, and test results are reviewed, as well as a summary of foundry benefits realized by ICS Florida with the EGAL process application.
