Polymer enhanced primary binders have been commercially available to the Precision Investment Casting Industry (PIC) for about 15 years. These binders were designed to eliminate buckling, lifting and cracking defects of primary shell coats. When first introduced, these binders were revolutionary when compared to standard colloidal silica that was widely used as a primary binder. Throughout the last 15 years there have been modifications to the various enhanced primary binders. This paper will discuss an advanced polymer enhanced primary binder that provides significant benefits to the PIC industry. Detail testing, both from the laboratory and from production environments, will be presented to show how this binder offers improved slurry life, excellent wetting properties and better stability.
