A medium duty variable displacement axial piston pump has been developed with integrated digital electronic control. The controls are integrated by the fact that there are no external wires between the sensors and the controller. The only external wires are the cable with power and analog commands and a cable for communication to the controller. The electronics and pump are compact in design and have passed environmental testing, i.e. EMI/EMC, temperature, ingress protection, and vibration. All the sensors are pre-calibrated and the pump is designed for plug and play ease of use. The pump settings can be changed by the end user through RS-232 protocol through a Windows based graphical user interface. Also, the pump can be controlled or the settings can be changed through CanBus J1939 communication protocol. The different pump control strategies will be discussed along with a comparison study between the advantages and disadvantages of hydro-mechanical versus electrically controlled pumps.
