Timber handling is a huge industry all over the world. The process involves many separate stages, from harvesting and transportation, to sawmills and refinement of products. In order to economically satisfy involved parties in the handling process, each step has to be cost effective, leaving reasonable margins for the refined products. Harvesting, which is the first stage in the handling process, is important as it states the entry level of both timber quality and cost. In this paper an overview of the life of a saw motor will be given. Based on the knowledge and understanding of this application a new solution for a hydraulic saw motor with closed loop control of the cutting process will be presented, adapted for the demanding life on the edge, fulfilling a reasonable lifetime expectance with increased performance. Presented lab and field test results verify the predicted improvements regarding enhanced cutting performance and lifetime.
