As every minute passes into the next, our technology continues to advance at an accelerating rate. Emerging technologies give birth to new ideas, which, in turn, evolve into new products. The fluid power industry is no exception. The term "multi-tasking" has become one of the 21st century’s most often heard buzzwords, and is now being used to describe products in addition to being a sought-after personality trait in an employee. Case in point: filtration systems are now available that can not only remove solid contaminants from hydraulic fluids, but can also be equipped with on-board particle counters and multi-functional controllers that can be programmed to perform any number of assignable tasks. The reduced availability of qualified personal to conduct adequate filtration maintenance demands this automation. This paper will describe the evolution of traditional single-purpose filters into smart, multi-tasking filtration systems.
