Today's hydraulic system applications are becoming more performance demanding, taxing cylinder operation. To keep pace with industry's demands, the requirement for high performance seals is a necessity. To achieve the required performance, piston seal development starts at the concept stage with a design to match the application. The next stage utilizes finite element analysis to ensure proper design from a theoretical standpoint. The final stage is the physical testing of the seal to confirm proper performance. This paper will discuss, in detail, four main areas: 1. Drawbacks of current & older piston seal designs 2. Development of a new piston seal using finite element analysis 3. Physical testing of the new piston seal 4. New piston seal's ability to overcome the deficiencies confronted by current & older piston seal designs.
