Kaltim-4 Ammonia Plant has a name plate capacity of 1000 MTPD and the ammonia production started at the end of December 2002. At the end of May 2005, hot spot was observed on the surface of secondary reformer. Since the maximum allowable skin shell temperature of 400oC (752 oF) was approached, the plant was shutdown on January 25, 2006. The hot spot on secondary reformer repeated three times and plant outages due to the hot spots. The paper reports the occurrences of hot spots and their repair resolution.
