Replacement of an S-200 basket with an S-300 basket in a 24-year-old ammonia plant

The Agrium Redwater Nitrogen Operations Ammonia 2 plant underwent a project that included the replacement of a 24-year-old Haldor Topsoe S-200 ammonia catalyst basket with a Haldor Topsoe S- 300, subsequent replacement of 24-year-old converter catalyst, the inspection and repair of the converter pressure shell and associated plant process modifications This paper will highlight the process description/operating basis, project execution including the inspection and subsequent repairs to converter pressure shell, as well as the condition of the 24 year old basket and catalyst, startup and EH&S considerations.
