In automotive design crash situations have to be taken into consideration. Car manufacturers began to regard the strain rate sensitivity of metals thereby. Thus stress-strain-curves at different strain rates and temperatures are needed for numerical computation and for comparison of different materials today. At the Department of Ferrous Metallurgy (IEHK) research in this field is done for almost two decades already. The work is focused on the testing of body materials. Projects with all German car manufacturers and steel companies and some abroad have been carried out and an extensive database could be established this way.
