The development carried out at Villares allows, through a new material, the obtainment of deep hardened rolls for cold strip mills, presenting results that shows the possibility of controlling the desired and specific hardened layer for each rolling mill, thus completely eliminating the need for rehardening rolls up to 60 mm of hardened layer. Wear properties of the roll material are a key factor in determining the performance in cold rolling applications concerning the resistance to the loss of finish (roughness). The hardness has an important effect on reducing roll marks. The appropriate hardness and microstructure have a combined effect on surface deterioration. The performance of work rolls for cold strip mills tends to be better with regards to wear resistance and maintenance of roughness for materials with higher hardened layers. The partnership between manufacturer and roll users shall allow a better adjustment of the properties needed for each application.
