Electrolytic Hard Chrome (EHC) plating has been used to provide corrosion and wear resistance for aircraft landing gears. However, the EHC plating process involves carcinogenic species and the landing gear community is therefore considering the replacement of EHC with High Velocity Oxy-Fuel (HVOF) thermal sprayed coatings. In order to qualify these coatings, the wear resistance, fatigue behaviour, and corrosion resistance have been investigated under the Hard-Chromium Alternatives Team (HCAT) program. This paper reports the results of an evaluation of a HVOF applied WC-10Co-4Cr coating and EHC plating under ASTM B117 salt fog test conditions.
